5-Day Florida Keys Camping Adventure
Drive the Overseas Highway, snorkel coral reefs, and camp oceanside
5 Days
Florida Keys
Best: December – May
Moderate1
Key Largo & the Reef
- Drive from Miami down US-1 to Key Largo (1 hr)
- Book a snorkel boat tour to the coral reef (book in advance!)
- Swim over living coral with parrotfish and sea turtles
- Camp at John Pennekamp — one of the few oceanfront sites
💡 Tip: Book snorkel tours at the park visitor center in advance — they fill up fast. Glass-bottom boat tours are a great alternative if you don't snorkel.
2
Islamorada Fishing & Kayaking
Camp at: Islamorada area camp
- Morning kayak through mangrove tunnels at Anne's Beach
- Visit the Theater of the Sea for dolphin encounters
- Try sport fishing for mahi-mahi or bonefish (charter boats available)
- Watch the famous Robbie's tarpon feeding (pelicans too)
💡 Tip: Robbie's Marina ($1 entry + fish) is a must. Tarpon jump out of the water for the bait fish. Arrive early.
3
Bahia Honda — Florida's Best Beach
- Drive south on US-1 to Bahia Honda State Park
- Spend the day on Sandspur Beach — arguably Florida's most beautiful
- Snorkel the offshore reef from the beach
- Walk across the old Seven Mile Bridge remnant for views
- Camp at one of the beachfront sites
💡 Tip: Bahia Honda sites book 11 months ahead to the day. If you can't get a site, day-use is still worth it.
4
Big Pine Key & Wildlife
Camp at: Bahia Honda State Park (2nd night)
- Morning wildlife drive at National Key Deer Refuge
- Spot the tiny endangered Key Deer (like dogs with antlers)
- Paddle to the blue hole — an inland cenote with alligators
- Swim at Bahia Honda again — because it's that good
💡 Tip: Key Deer are best seen at dawn and dusk. Drive slowly on Big Pine Key roads — they wander freely.
5
Key West Sunset & Home
- Drive to Key West (the end of the road!)
- Explore Duval Street and Mallory Square
- Visit the southernmost point of the continental US
- Watch the famous Mallory Square sunset celebration
- Drive back north (or fly home from EYW airport)
💡 Tip: Key West parking is brutal — pay for a garage. The sunset celebration at Mallory Square has street performers and is free to attend.
