    Challenging
    1

Ocala National Forest — Dispersed Paradise

Camp at: Ocala National Forest (Dispersed off FR 88)
    • Drive to Ocala National Forest — Florida's boondocking mecca
    • Find a dispersed site along Forest Road 88 or 88A
    • Set up camp in the sand pine scrub — it's free and legal
    • Swim at Juniper Springs (day use $5.50 — worth it)
    • Hike a section of the Florida Trail through the forest
💡 Tip: Dispersed rules: camp 25ft from water, 14-day limit, pack out all trash. FR 88 has the most sites. No facilities — bring your own water.
    2

Camel Lake — Free Forest Lakeside

Camp at: Camel Lake, Apalachicola National Forest
    • Drive to Apalachicola National Forest (3.5 hrs northwest)
    • Camp free at Camel Lake — vault toilets and fire rings included
    • Swim in the tea-colored lake surrounded by longleaf pine
    • Hike the Camel Lake Loop Trail (3 miles)
    • Watch for red-cockaded woodpeckers — endangered species here
💡 Tip: Camel Lake is one of the best free campgrounds in the Southeast. Sites are first-come, first-served and rarely full. Water is not potable — bring your own.
    3

Three Lakes WMA — Wilderness Camping

Camp at: Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area
    • Drive south to Three Lakes WMA near Kenansville (4 hrs)
    • Free primitive camping — no facilities but real wilderness
    • Hike the Prairie Lakes section of the Florida Trail
    • Spot sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and wild turkeys
    • Incredible stargazing — almost zero light pollution
💡 Tip: Check hunting season dates at myfwc.com — avoid camping during hunts. A day-use permit is free. The prairie landscape here is surprisingly beautiful.
    4

Green Swamp — Central FL Hidden Gem

Camp at: Green Swamp East (dispersed)
    • Drive to Green Swamp East WMA (2 hrs north toward Lakeland)
    • Free primitive camping along the dirt roads
    • Mountain biking on the Croom trails (if you have a bike)
    • Explore the Withlacoochee River area
    • Head home after a $0 campsite-fee adventure
💡 Tip: Green Swamp roads can be sandy — high clearance helps but isn't required. This is excellent mountain biking territory. Bugs can be intense near the swamp — bug net essential.
